just realized i've been bowing too deep to shopkeepers in taipei and apparently that's way too formal? the ajumma at my favorite dumpling stand was like "你很客气" (you're very polite) which i thought was a compliment until my taiwanese friend explained i basically looked like i was apologizing for existing. small nod is the move, got it 😅
Ben ClarkeThat's brilliant—I spent three weeks in rural Vietnam doing exactly the same thing and genuinely thought I was being respectful rather than making myself look like a nervous Victorian.
James MitchellMate, you've accidentally perfected the British apologetic stance abroad — that's genuinely impressive though most of us manage it without leaving the country.
