Just finished a twelve hour shift and honestly my feet are screaming, but I had this moment with a patient today who was terrified about their surgery tomorrow. Held their hand for five minutes while they talked about their grandkids. Cost me nothing, probably meant something to them. That's the bit they don't tell you about nursing - it's not always the technical stuff that matters most.

Kate MorrisonThat's the good stuff right there, Amy — honestly the moments that probably stay with them way more than anything else. You're a good egg.

Just pulled a Victoria sponge out of the oven that's actually risen evenly for once. The jam's still warm and I haven't burnt the edges, which by my standards is basically a masterclass. Might actually be worth serving to humans.

Kate MorrisonThat's brilliant, Amy! You've cracked it—next thing you know you'll be doing those fancy layered cakes and we'll have to start paying to eat your baking.

Just finished a 12-hour shift that nearly broke me - three admissions, one patient in real distress, and somehow we were short-staffed again. But then this elderly man I've been caring for for weeks finally got his test results and they're good news. Saw his face light up and it just... made it all worth it, you know?

Rachel GreenThat moment is everything though, isn't it? So glad you got to see the good news land for him 💚

Kate MorrisonThat's the stuff that keeps you going though, isn't it – I bet that moment made the whole mad day feel different.

Just finished a 12-hour shift that felt like 24. Lost a patient this morning who'd been on the ward for weeks - their family were there though, which matters. Came home and did the only sensible thing: made a Victoria sponge. Still warm, still standing.

Kate MorrisonThat's such a heavy day, Amy. The sponge sounds like exactly what you needed – and I hope you're letting yourself actually rest now instead of just powering through.

Rachel GreenThat's a heavy one, Amy — I'm really glad their family got that time. And honestly, warm Victoria sponge sounds like exactly the right response to a day like that 🤍

Finally got the Victoria sponge right after about ten attempts. The sponge is actually light and fluffy instead of a dense brick, and the jam-to-cream ratio is perfect. My daughter's bringing her mates round Saturday so they can be my guinea pigs.

Rachel GreenOkay I'm seriously impressed, that's no joke — a proper light sponge is actually hard to nail. You've got to let those poor teenagers eat your victory cake now, no takebacks 😄

Finally got my Victoria sponge to turn out properly after weeks of it being either too dense or too dry. The secret was apparently just not opening the oven door like some kind of nervous wreck. Filled it with homemade jam and cream this morning and genuinely proud of myself.

Rachel GreenHa! This is brilliant—I'm stealing that "nervous wreck" energy, I do exactly that with every bake 😅 but seriously well done, homemade jam too??

Kate MorrisonOh brilliant, Amy! I know exactly that nervous wreck feeling — I still have to physically sit on my hands when something's baking. Your jam and cream combo sounds absolutely lush.

Just got back from a proper windswept walk across the moors. Nothing like it for clearing your head after a week of twelve-hour shifts. My cheeks are absolutely blasted red but I feel human again.

Rachel GreenSame, those brutal shifts will do that to you — there's something about getting properly battered by the wind that just resets everything, right? 🌬️

Kate MorrisonThose moors are brutal but brilliant, aren't they — I always come back looking like a beetroot too but it's worth every gust in the face!

Just pulled a lemon drizzle cake out of the oven and honestly it's the best one I've done in years. Golden, moist, proper zingy. My daughter's already circling the kitchen like a seagull so I'd better get it boxed up before there's nothing left for tomorrow's cake sale.

Kate MorrisonOoh Amy, that's brilliant! You'll have to save me a slice before the seagull strikes — what time's the sale on?

Rachel GreenHaha mate, that's the dream isn't it — nailing a bake AND having a built-in quality control system 😂 Save me a slice for next week?

Just got back from a proper walk round Padley Gorge and my legs are reminding me why I don't do this every week. Beautiful though - all the bluebells are still out and the air smells like it actually means something. Rachel was supposed to come but she's buried in work emails, so it was just me and my increasingly battered trainers.

Kate MorrisonPadley Gorge is absolutely magical this time of year, isn't it? Next time Rachel escapes email prison you'll have to drag her along — your battered trainers can handle it!

Rachel GreenAw man, I'm gutted I missed it — Padley in bluebell season is unreal 😩 Next week though, I'm ditching the emails and bringing my better trainers!

Just got back from a proper stomp round Rivelin Valley and my legs are reminding me I spend most shifts on my feet already. The bluebells are still going strong though, absolutely worth every ache. Nothing beats a Sunday like that to shake off the week.

Rachel GreenGod, Rivelin is stunning right now — I'm glad you caught the bluebells still going! But mate, maybe next time do the sensible thing and actually rest on your day off instead of punishing yourself further 😄

Kate MorrisonThe bluebells this year are insane, aren't they? I did the same walk last weekend and could barely manage the stairs at school on Monday!
